Oil pulling. To some, it could be considered just another thing crazy health nuts do, to others, it’s a magical ritual performed each morning that brings 678990 health benefits. Why I haven’t discovered this sooner is beyond me.
I’ve heard about oil pulling here and there but have never given it much thought. I suppose that’s because I’ve lived under an unhealthy rock and have just recently decided to crawl out and embrace the world of health. Hello, Healthy World!
Seriously though, I’m taking my number 1 resolution and really sticking to it. I’ve been working out every day and doing my very best to make better eating choices. I slip up a few times, but hey, I’m human and weening myself off sugar and crap food is not easy! I’ve def stepped up my water game though and the fact that I’ve been working out for more than 5 minutes for 1 day and then quitting is a huge win for me.
Back to oil pulling- I came across a few pins on Pinterest mentioning the ancient ritual and after reading a few different websites, decided to give it a go and try it out for no less than a full week.
Verdict? IN LOVE. I could tell a huge difference after the first day. My breath was fresher and after a week of doing it, my teeth looked whiter. Goodbye crappy white strips!!
What is oil pulling AND what does it do?
Oil pulling is a folk remedy where oil is “swished” or “held” in the mouth.
According to this article, in the Journal of Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine, they recently highlighted a study that reviewed holistic approaches to oral health and discovered that oil pulling is one of the most effective natural health solutions known to scientists that prevent tooth decay and loss. Praised for curing more than 30 systemic diseases, the authors of this study have some profound things to say about this ancient natural healing practice:
“Oil pulling is a powerful detoxifying Ayurvedic technique that has recently become very popular as a CAM remedy for many different health ailments. Using this method, surgery or medication could be prevented for a number of chronic illnesses. The oil therapy is preventative as well as curative. The exciting aspect of this healing method is its simplicity.”
∗Kills bad breath
∗Heals bleeding gums
∗Prevents heart disease
∗Soothes throat dryness
∗Heals cracked lips
∗Boosts Immune System
∗Strengthens gums and jaw
∗Take about a spoonful of oil, I like to use coconut oil and according to most websites, like this one, coconut oil is the best. Plus, coconut oil has a ton of other health benefits and uses > found here. Swish that spoonful of coconut oil around in your mouth for 10-20 minutes. You can change it out every 5-8 minutes if you need to, but make sure you’re doing it for a consecutive 10-20 minutes. DO NOT SWALLOW- very important! The oil will be full of the toxins that were just pulled from your mouth and will be super toxic if swallowed!! Spit in the trash, not the sink < your sink will get clogged and no one wants to go out and buy a ton of Drano. When you’re finished, rinse with salt water- it contains antimicrobial properties.
*** Make sure that you are oil pulling FIRST thing in the morning. Before you brush your teeth, drink water, have coffee, eat breakfast. Do it right after you roll out of bed.
You can do this daily btw, and you should start to see results after about a week.
Thoughts? Anyone else tried oil pulling and fallen in love with it?
