One of the things that really resonated was when they said:
“In order to stick out amongst the hundreds of others doing the same thing, you have to tell your story, figure out who you are and what you’re trying to portray with your brand or business or blog”
Basically, let your audience know where you’re coming from, where you’re going, and what you’re about.
So, let me back it up a bit and start from the beginning.
About 2 years ago, I left a job I had been working in for about 3 years to go somewhere that I thought was going to be better.
(Perfect example that the grass is definitely not always greener on the other side.)
In fact, if I’m being 1000% honest, it was dead and brown on this other side, and I realized after about a week, I’d made a huge mistake.
Flash forward to about 4 months later, I was sitting at home by myself almost in tears because I was beyond miserable at this other job, wondering what in the actual fuck I was going to do with my life. I didn’t finish college (I was bored, and figured it was a waste of time and money to go when I had no idea why I was going), and I had no clue what I would even want to do. The only thing I was super sure about was that I wanted to be my own boss and do something I loved everyday.
Being my own boss has basically always been the goal. I hate listening to other people or being told what to do (just ask my mom), and I like to do things my way and see what happens. Put a project out there and tweak as you go along, I say.
As I was contemplating working on a street corner just so I could quit my job (I kid, I kid!), an idea came to me.
I should start a blog.
But a specific type of blog.
I love to write and share things with other people, and I wanted to inspire someone else or give them a space to escape to from their day to day life. I also really wanted to have a space where I could reach thousands of people and raise awareness for what’s happening to our planet, but also keep it fun and light.
Sharing super easy recipes since I am no Betty Crocker, affordable clothes, organic beauty products, and basically whatever else just pops into my head, but also letting peeps know why it’s super important to use cruelty free products or animal-free products, recycle, and help the Earth.
Oh, of course, I had one main vision, and that was to make it an experience for my readers. Since I’m a true California chick, that laid-back, beach bum, kind of vibe had to shine through and everyday I strive to make it more of a “getaway” feel.
When I initially launched the blog, I wasn’t really worried about the fact that I had no idea what I was doing, or how to take good pictures… All I cared about was doing something that made me happy and that I could look forward to everyday. It’s taken a while to even get to where I am now and I still have a long way to go, but I love that the blog is my own thing at the end of the day.
I say what I want, I post what I want and I don’t have anyone bossing me around or just straight up not really jiving with me.
I still want to build an amazing community, write a book, and launch a product line that benefits several charities dedicating to saving animals and the planet, and just do what I love everyday, but if I can inspire at least one person to find the silver lining if they’re stuck like I was, and discover something they love to do, then the blog is a success.
So here we are, almost 2 years, 3 blog name changes, and lots of “just winging it” moments later. But I’ve loved every step of my blogging journey and I know it’s only going to get better from here.
If you’re wondering what happened to that shitty job, I actually ended up getting fired (best thing to happen to me), and am now working with amazing people and have a great job, and still obviously busting my butt when it comes to the blog.
I always say everything happens for a reason, and I kind of like that I was so miserable for those few months, because the blog was born.
If you’re in a similar situation or were, share your story below and link back to your blog or biz so I can check it out!
